Answer
There are a range of factors causing pupil absence at school. These can include illness, family problems, negative feelings towards school and so on. For authorised absences, illness (which includes anxiety and emotionally based school avoidance) remains the most common reason for absence in all schools.
Whilst we must have a universal approach to supporting pupil attendance, I am mindful that there are specific vulnerable groups of children and young people who may require additional support. These groups can include those entitled to Free School Meals, pupils with Special Educational Needs, newcomer and Traveller children and Children Looked After or Care Experienced Children.
I will be consulting on an "Attendance Matters" strategy in the coming months.
