Answer

Artificial Intelligence (AI) and data-driven technologies are increasingly central to modern governance, economic growth, and social well-being. Governments worldwide are adopting AI capabilities to enhance public services, drive innovation, and strengthen resilience against emerging challenges. In Northern Ireland, there is a growing AI ecosystem spanning government, academic research, and private-sector activity. That is why we are creating an AI Unit.

To ensure strategic alignment, transparency, and effective outcomes, we have tasked the Chief Scientific and Technology Adviser with chairing a Task-and-Finish Group comprising representatives from government departments, industry and academia to scope out the remit of, and objectives for, an Office of AI and Digital, as set out in the PfG the first meeting took place in March 2025.

Recognising AI’s transformative power and the need for responsible stewardship, the Group will provide leadership, technical insights, and cross-sector coordination across five workstream pillars: AI Governance; AI Infrastructure; Data; AI Skills; and Public Sector Transformation. Work will then commence on the development of an AI Action Plan on the basis of what is identified through the Task-and-Finish Group.

The Task-and-Finish Group will be an opportunity for all government departments, other public sector bodies, academia, and industry to collaborate to develop an AI Action Plan to deliver tangible benefits for the NI economy and society.

Our Chief Scientific and Technology Advisor is already working with a range of key stakeholders to develop a regional strategy for Science and Technology to drive this work forward.
