Answer

Ensuring that Artificial Intelligence (AI) is developed and deployed ethically and responsibly is vital to maximising the benefits of this technology for business and wider society.

The AI Collaboration Centre (AICC), funded by my Department and Invest NI, plays a central role in promoting AI awareness and responsible adoption among businesses in the north. The AICC places a strong emphasis on ethical and responsible innovation, including the recent launch of its Responsible AI Hub, which provides resources, guidance, and support to help organisations navigate the ethical challenges of AI and ensure best practice in its use.

In addition, my Department is supporting the development of skills and expertise in ethical AI through the funding of postgraduate awards via the AICC, including a dedicated MSc in Ethical and Responsible Artificial Intelligence at Ulster University. These initiatives are helping to build a pipeline of talent equipped to address the ethical, legal, and societal implications of AI.

I have set up a new dedicated AI Team with the aim to fully realise the opportunities presented by the transition to AI and digital technologies, while keeping ethical and responsible innovation at the heart of our approach.
