Answer
Following my announcement on the establishment of a Regional Obesity Management Service for Northern Ireland, my officials are working to develop an implementation plan.
The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) Technology Appraisal (TA) TA1026 - Tirzepatide for managing overweight and obesity, has been endorsed, following review, applicable in Northern Ireland, as an option for managing overweight and obesity. This has been considered, in addition to reviewing Weight management services delivered in other nations.
As part of commissioned service delivery within the Regional Obesity Management Service, adult patients will have access to weight loss medication, if clinically appropriate, as well as lifestyle support to ensure maximum effectiveness. Further phases will be developed, subject to funding. The service will provide equitable, sustainable and affordable access to weight loss medication to optimise outcomes for those with the highest clinical need.
My Department acknowledges that full implementation of this service will require consideration of financial and service requirements, including clinical capacity, specialist support and the development of a coordinated and sustainable service model and care pathways.
