Answer

In 2025, Translink concluded work to undertake the initial development of four projects outlined as a priority in the short-medium term in the All-Island Strategic Rail Review. These were the reopening of the Antrim to Knockmore line, the Portadown to Derry line, the Portadown to Armagh line and Electrification from Belfast to the Border. High level outcomes from the study were published in December 2025 as part of the Shaping the Future document https://www.translink.co.uk/about-translink/media/pressreleases/shaping-the-future

I have allocated £1m in this financial year to progress priority tasks, including detailed technical work on the proposed connection to Belfast International Airport, engagement with planning authorities, development of signalling and electrification proposals, and assessment of user worked crossings along the route.

The delivery timeline for Translink's rail expansion plans including the Knockmore line will be subject to the availability of funding, approval of the necessary business cases, and securing statutory consents.
