Answer
My Department is aware of the needs of pedestrians, particularly the young, elderly and those with disabilities and tries to provide facilities where a need has been identified.
As part of the resurfacing scheme on Purdysburn Road three existing pedestrian islands will be upgraded and a new pedestrian island will be provided between Bests Hill and Greenwood Glen. These measures will enhance the pedestrian infrastructure and promote active travel in the area.
Officials have carried out a speed limit assessment on the road in line with my Department’s policy. This assessment has concluded that the existing speed limit on Purdysburn Road is appropriate. The existing road markings will however be reconfigured during the resurfacing scheme to encourage drivers to lower their speed.
